Late-night vote sets Obamacare up for filibuster-free repeal

Late-night vote sets Obamacare up for filibuster-free repeal

Saturday, January 14, 2017

At 1:30 a.m. on Thursday morning the United States Senate voted to include the repeal of the Affordable Care Act, better known as Obamacare, as part of a budget blueprint. This procedural measure allows most of Obamacare to be repealed by a simple majority rather than the usual requirement of 60 out of the senate’s 100 votes and effectively prevents the use of filibuster.

“We’re working with legislative leaders at this very moment to begin to craft legislation that will repeal the most corrosive elements of Obamacare — the individual mandate, the taxes, the penalties — but at the same time, moving separate legislation that will allow us to introduce the kind of reforms in American health care that’ll lower the cost of health insurance without growing the size of government,” said Vice President-elect Mike Pence.

Democratic Senator Maria Cantwell of Washington had a different view, going so far as to call this “stealing health care from Americans.”

The filibuster is a last-ditch tactic in which parties opposed to a certain motion refuse to relinquish the floor until their opponents give in or compromise.

Although the 51-48 vote was mostly along party lines, some Republicans have expressed uncertainty about repealing Obamacare before a replacement system is worked out. Although president-elect Donald Trump has called for a “repeal and replace” plan, saying that a new health care system would be enacted “almost simultaneously,” many in government and the press have expressed doubts about whether this would actually happen.

Senator Susan Collins of Maine said she would like to at least see a well-constructed plan before voting and Senator Johnny Isakson of Georgia said repealing Obamacare without replacing it was “unacceptable.” These concerns were shared by members of the House of Representatives. “We need to be voting for a replacement plan at the same time that we vote for repeal,” added Representative Mark Meadows of North Carolina. Representative Tom MacArthur of New Jersey agreed, saying, “We’re loading a gun here. I want to know where it’s pointed before we start the process.”

Anna Merlan of Jezebel and Anthony Taylor of the Associated Press dismiss Trump’s timeline as “impossible” given the complicated nature of U.S. congressional workings. Senator Collins agreed, saying “I don’t see any possibility of our being able to come up with a comprehensive reform bill that would replace Obamacare by the end of this month. I just don’t see that as being feasible.”

The Affordable Care Act, which is often cited as a key accomplishment of the Obama administration, has had a mixed reputation, and many conservatives believe a market-based health care system would be more flexible and efficient and less costly, and many believe that the Affordable Care Act only passed because of Obama’s later discredited pledge that no one who liked their current health plan would have to switch. Matt O’Brien of The Washington Post claims a large tax cut that would result for the wealthiest 1% of citizens if Obamacare funds were not converted to other purposes, estimated at about $32,820 annually per person by the Tax Policy Center, is also a significant motive.

Republican Senators set a date of January 27 to repeal Obamacare, according to NBC News. House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy of California says legislation repealing Obamacare and replacing it could ready by late February. According to Democratic Senator Bernie Sanders, as many as 30 million people could lose their health insurance if the ACA is repealed.

Intel launches 45nm “Penryn” processor aiming for energy-efficiency

Intel launches 45nm “Penryn” processor aiming for energy-efficiency

Tuesday, November 13, 2007

This week in Taiwan Intel and other technology companies showcased server and computer hardware with processors built using “Penryn” technology, the second generation of quad core technology that is produced with the high-k metal Hafnium that has come to replace halogen and lead components, which are not environmentally safe.

This new 45 nanometer (45nm) process technology included features on Intel Streaming SIMD Extensions 4 (SSE4) compatible with video decoding (encoding) software, “Radix 16” which increased computing efficiency, and “deep power down” technology for energy efficiency. For the SSE4 feature, this will benefit makers of high-definition and AV-media, as both HDMI and 1080p are supported.

Companies that will participate in the Taiwan Informonth exhibition next month, announced that some products with “Penryn” processors will be on the market by then. Some companies like Tyan and Supermicro will provide small business solutions as well as enterprises solutions. This launch will be tied to other unveilings by the IT and AV-media industries in Taiwan.

Woman returns home with Christmas turkey, a month after setting out

Woman returns home with Christmas turkey, a month after setting out

Tuesday, January 19, 2010

A Scottish woman who set out before Christmas to purchase a turkey finally made it home on Monday, after being cut off by snow for a month. Kay Ure left the Lighthouse Keeper’s cottage on Cape Wrath, at the very northwest tip of Great Britain, in December. She was heading to Inverness on a shopping trip.

However on her return journey heavy snow and ice prevented her husband, John, from travelling the last 11 miles to pick her up. She was forced to wait a month in a friend’s caravan, before the weather improved and the couple could finally be reunited.

They were separated not just for Christmas and New Year, but also for Mr Ure’s 58th birthday. With no fresh supplies, he was reduced to celebrating with a tin of baked beans. He also ran out of coal, and had to feed the couple’s six springer spaniels on emergency army rations.

“It’s the first time we’ve been separated”, said Mr Ure in December. “We’ve been snowed in here for three weeks before, so we are well used to it and it’s quite nice to get a bit of peace and quiet.”

Why Use An Inkjet Printer?

By Clair O’Hara

Inkjet printers come in a huge selection of models ranging from cheaper, low-end printers to high-end printers for printing quality images. If you are using your printer for home or small office use, a low-end inkjet should suffice – for example, if you are printing receipts, letters and low quality images. For offices or homeowners who want to use their inkjet to produce high quality images, flyers and other promotional materials it would be investing in a more expensive printer for its high resolution and colour quality.

Inkjet printers come in a variety of forms. You can buy portable, lightweight printers if you’re on the go or travelling for business – some weigh less than five pounds! Portable printers are ideal if you’re on the move and they can be battery powered and allow you to print photos without a computer via USB cable. They are designed to compact and can produce high quality prints depending on which type of model you buy. Other types also allow you to print images directly from your digital camera, and some will have an LCD display screen so you can see the images you are printing on your printer.

YouTube Preview Image

A standard inkjet printer for basic home or office use will usually come with three settings: draft, standard and quality (or something similar). These settings should suffice if you are just using your printer to produce basic documents such as receipts, emails and low quality images.

The speed of an inkjet printer is measured in the number of pages it can print per minute (PPM) – the speed of the printer is an important factor if you are wanting to constantly produce high quality images. As is the printer resolution, which is measured in dots per inch (DPI). Inkjets work by spraying small droplets of ink onto the paper creating very fine, high quality images, the higher the DPI, the better the quality and the more crisp the image. Another important factor you should consider when purchasing a printer is its memory size, the memory built into the printer is its RAM but you should also consider additional memory if you are serious about printing. Many printers come with memory card slots and USB slots so you can print photos directly from your digital camera. Also check your printer’s paper handling capacity, most printing trays will be able to hold 250 pages but if you are printing constantly throughout the day it would be worth checking if your printer has the option to add additional trays.

You should also consider which type of cartridge your inkjet takes – how expensive are they to buy? Do third-party cartridge stores supply this type of cartridge so you can save money on printing costs? Inkjet cartridges can be pricey so it’s worth seeing if third-party suppliers can provide you with refills so you aren’t left with a gaping hole in your pocket. Not only will you be saving money by purchasing a third-party refill but you’ll also be helping the planet’s already limited resources by recycling.

Amazon dips into memory hole to retrieve Orwellian works

Amazon dips into memory hole to retrieve Orwellian works

Saturday, September 5, 2009

American-based online retailer Amazon.com has backtracked from its July decision and actions to remotely delete George Orwell‘s classic dystopian novels, Nineteen Eighty-Four and Animal Farm, from customers’ Kindle e-book readers.

Late Thursday, Amazon emailed owners of Kindle readers who had previously lost copies of these novels, offering a new copy of the deleted books, or a gift certificate or check for US$30. In the email, the company’s chief executive, Jeff Bezos apologised again, and described the earlier actions as “stupid, thoughtless and painfully out of line with our principles.”

Initially, the two works of Orwell were made available to Kindle owners by a third-party company which did not have the rights to distribute them. When Amazon was alerted to this by the actual rights holder, the company removed the books from their online store then, far more controversially, remotely deleted the books from their customers’ devices before issuing refunds.

In the aftermath of significant press coverage of Amazon’s actions to remove content, legal action was started against them in Washington alleging violations of the company’s published terms of service, the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, and Washington’s consumer protection legislation. A Michigan student named as a plaintiff in the case explained that the deletion of his copy of 1984 had rendered his annotations and notes worthless.

First published in 1949, the novel Nineteen Eighty-Four will not enter the public domain in the United States until 2044.

Fan Expo Canada 2019 offers celebrities, cosplay, panels

Fan Expo Canada 2019 offers celebrities, cosplay, panels

Monday, September 2, 2019

In late August, the Canadian city of Toronto celebrated the quarter century anniversary of Fan Expo Canada, a massive annual pop culture convention. Running from August 22 to 25, the event featured extensive retail areas, panels, celebrity appearances, an artist alley, and attendees in cosplay. Wikinews attended.

At the panel “Breaking Into Comics,” speakers shared their insights into getting started as a comic artist or writer. Comic artist Jenn St-Onge (Nancy Drew, Jem and the Misfits) told of being forced to re-evaluate her life, after growing up with ample positive reinforcement about being an artist. “In my first stint, I didn’t get any work. […] to come back and get that kind of second chance, eight years ago, it feels really good to have people coming to you and being ‘I want you to work,’ and basically working seven days a week for the last eight years.”

“You have to work those seven days to earn a weekend,” quipped Valiant Entertainment editor Heather Antos, later in the panel. While all agreed that time off was rare as a freelancer, artist Leisha Riddell emphasized the need for boundaries, saying “this weekend, I’m becoming part of the couch and playing video games until my eyes go blurry.”

Actress Denise Crosby is set to appear in the final season of Suits, a Toronto-shot legal series. The actress recalled her season with Star Trek: The Next Generation, when they were the “scrappy little red headed stepchild of the [Paramount] lot.”

Underwhelmed with her role, she left the series toward the end of its first season. “This is not what I wanted to become an actor for. I didn’t want to stand on the bridge and just go ‘aye aye captain,’ you know, and not even move. I actually asked them to make up some fake legs” to place at the character Tasha Yar’s bridge station, which was on a risen platform. “You could just stick my legs, just fake legs, and I had no lines[….] You gotta know that Tasha’s on her command post, but just put the legs there, just keep the camera low.”

Actor Brendan Fraser’s appearance at the convention was directly from filming The Professionals in South Africa. He quipped “I still have dust in my shoes.”

The cast of the sitcom Kim’s Convenience had a panel in a room for 700 people. The popular series is based on a 2011 stage play about a Korean-Canadian family that operates a convenience store. Simu Liu, one of the series leads, is to play the titular character in Marvel film Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021).

Lead Paul Sun-Hyung Lee talked about how the series has been underestimated “up ’til now.” During the premiere, “I felt like Cinderella at the ball […] I’m a jobber, I’ve been working as an actor for like, close to 25 years, lots of small roles. Expositionary characters, never asked to carry anything, to be a lead, to actually have a background story. And so to finally be able to do an entire season of television as one of the lead actors was tremendous”.

Hasbro hosted a panel about their Star Wars products, which promoted their new action figures and helmets. The company’s upcoming replica helmet is of Luke Skywalker’s X-wing helmet, their “number one requested hero helmet […] This by far is the most labor-intensive helmet to date.” While previous helmets have included movie sound, this product includes lights to simulate the enemy ships going past your head.

Asked about sustainability, the company noted that recently they had switched to a bio-based PET for their packaging, “which was more plant-based plastic for greater environmental concerns. […] This week, Hasbro announced that we’re […] looking to switch away from plastic altogether, in terms of our packaging […] we’re very much aware that a lot of times times plastic is […] ripped off and discarded, so we’re constantly trying to improve on that as a company to improve our environmental footprint.”

The event played host to the Rocket League WGN North American Championship, with the winning team receiving C$10,000 and a trip to a professional circuit event.

“Successor to mp3”; MusicDNA founder interviewed

“Successor to mp3”; MusicDNA founder interviewed

Thursday, February 11, 2010

At the end of January, Bach Technology announced their new music file format, MusicDNA, which was developed as an intended replacement for the mp3 format, which has been the dominant format in music since its inception. MusicDNA uses similar compression methods to mp3, but then also adds an xml file which defines other content that can be included. Wikinews reporter Tristan Thomas caught up with Bach Technology CEO Stefan Kohlmeyer to find out more.

((Wikinews)) Thank you for agreeing to answer our questions.

((WN)) Can you briefly explain what MusicDNA is?

((Stefan Kohlmeyer)) We believe that MusicDNA is the successor to the MP3, the MusicDNA media extension enables music fans to access from one application the wide range of music-related content they want alongside the music itself – from lyrics, artwork and tour dates to blog posts, videos and twitter feeds.

In addition to all this extra content, MusicDNA files are also intelligent, and include extensive audio analysis information for each single track. This means that search and recommendation tools or automatic playlist generators will be much more sophisticated and provide much better results.

((WN)) How long has it been in development and what role has Karlheinz Brandenburg, the man credited with inventing mp3, played in that?

((SK)) In essence MusicDNA in its current context has been in development since the start of the company in 2007. Bach has an important strategic partnership with Fraunhofer IDMT with its CEO Karlheinz Brandenburg who is an important person for us in all research projects and visionary discussions about the development of the music market.

((WN)) Is this just going to be another consumer hurting format war with iTunes LP? What makes MusicDNA better than iTunes LP?

((SK)) Unlike iTunes LP, MusicDNA files have been built on open standards and are completely platform agnostic, which means that, unlike iTunes LP, you’re not tied to one device or media player. So it’s about the opposite of format wars really.

Whilst LP goes some way to adding value to digital music, it is still essentially a static file with some extra content bolted on. MusicDNA not only gives back all the things we lost when we switched to digital formats, lyrics, liner notes, artwork, but crucially it goes beyond that allowing fans to access everything from Twitter feeds and videos through to concert tickets, this will all dynamically update whenever you’re online, so music fans always have the latest information to hand.

Importantly with MusicDNA you can customise single tracks, you’re not restricted to purchasing complete albums as you are with LP.

And because all the additional rich media is integrated into the file (unlike iTunes LP), that content can be easily transferred from one device to another.

Mark Mulligan, vice president and research director of industry analysts Forrester Research recently put it well to the UK’s Telegraph newspaper “innovations like the iTunes LP need to go further. People should pay just once to get everything that artist does over the next year in one file that is regularly updated.”

((WN)) Is this really what listeners want-more clutter to distract from the music itself? What’s wrong with mp3?

We developed MusicDNA based on how people interact with their favourite music and musicians today.

((SK)) A lot of people, especially those who grew up buying music on vinyl and CD, miss the packaging, the liner notes, all the things that went hand in hand with albums, so for them that ‘clutter’ is an important part of the experience. We developed MusicDNA based on how people interact with their favourite music and musicians today, so we’re just following the public’s lead in many ways. MusicDNA enables fans to stay constantly connected with the worlds of their favourite artists in a really convenient way. Importantly, MusicDNA files can be customised so that they contain as little or much extra content as the listener wants.

You have to remember the MP3 was developed over twenty years ago, think of how much has changed in that time. It has had a profound effect on the music industry, but beyond portability it doesn’t actually add anything to the experience, the opposite in fact.

((WN)) Will MusicDNA be any less susceptible to piracy than other formats?

Do you think MusicDNA has a future? Will it replace mp3?
Add or view comments

((SK)) As only paid for files will dynamically update MusicDNA should be an incentive for people to purchase legitimate files rather than downloading them from p2p networks.

Over the last decade a lot of effort has gone into trying to stop piracy through sanctions and enforcement, and, well, the results speak for themselves. We believe in a carrot approach, giving the public what they actually want and a great incentive to go the legit route.

((WN)) Many people argue that music is moving away from being owned and more towards models like Spotify; free, streamed music. Is MusicDNA not too late to the party if this is so?

((SK)) Like many in the industry Bach are of the view that there is no one silver bullet to suit all types of consumer, rather a variety of services will serve different fans with different needs.

There are many occasions when a download is preferable to a stream, and MusicDNA files have the advantage of customised, at your fingertips, rich media available on- and offline. And that is before considering the impact of streaming on growing bandwidth and energy requirements.

((WN)) So when will we start to see MusicDNA and where?

((SK)) Rollout will be staggered over 2010, with the first beta versions available around Easter and the full commercial rollout expected over summer.

((WN)) And finally, your favourite artist at the moment to be released on MusicDNA this year?

((SK)) It’s too early to say, but we’re in talks with some very exciting artists. I would love to see all my old heroes on MusicDNA, starting with Led Zeppelin and The Clash.

((WN)) Thank you again for your time. Good luck with the launch.
